Why it's worth it

FOCUS is the most quietly useful thing to come out of the FinOps Foundation. Every provider invented its own billing schema, so multi-cloud cost analysis has always started with weeks of bespoke normalisation before anyone can answer a simple question. FOCUS is the vendor-neutral format that deletes that step. This is also the cheapest of the five offerings and the most directly technical, which makes it the easiest one to justify if you build the pipelines rather than read the dashboards.

Prep tips

Pull a real FOCUS export from a provider you use and keep it open while you work through the column definitions, because the specification makes far more sense against actual rows than in the abstract.
Pay close attention to where costs can be double counted or misattributed when you join datasets, since that is exactly the failure mode the specification exists to prevent.
