Who this is for

Engineers who build the internal platform other teams ship on, rather than operating a cluster directly.

What it covers

  • Platform architecture and infrastructure (15%)
  • GitOps and continuous delivery (25%)
  • Platform APIs and self-service capabilities (25%)
  • Observability and operations (20%)
  • Security and policy enforcement (15%)

Domain names above reflect the current official curriculum's topic areas; exact weightings are set by the Linux Foundation/CNCF and revised periodically, so check their published curriculum for the current breakdown.

Why it's worth it

The most senior exam in the cloud native catalogue and the only one that tests design judgement rather than operation. It is performance-based at the same price as the CKA, and the weighting tells you what it cares about: half the exam is delivery and self-service APIs, which is the part of platform engineering people usually learn by getting it wrong in production first. Do not treat it as a first certification. It assumes everything the CKA covers.

Prep tips

  • Build a real self-service path end to end before sitting it, even a small one. The exam rewards having designed an interface other engineers consume, and that is hard to fake from reading.
  • GitOps and continuous delivery is 25% on its own. If your delivery experience is pipeline scripts rather than a reconciling controller, close that gap first.
  • It is a live terminal like the CKA, so the same advice applies: practise against the clock, and know where the documentation lives rather than memorising flags.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CNPE certification?
The Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer, a performance-based Linux Foundation exam covering platform architecture, GitOps delivery, self-service APIs, observability and policy enforcement. Two hours in a live terminal.
How much is the CNPE with a discount code?
List price is $445. With RUSHABH30 it drops to about $311, a saving of roughly $134.
Is the CNPE harder than the CKA?
Different rather than harder. The CKA tests whether you can operate a cluster; the CNPE tests whether you can design something other engineers build on top of. It assumes CKA-level knowledge as a starting point.
Should this be my first certification?
No. It is aimed at people already doing platform work. If you are new to Kubernetes, the CKA is the better purchase and the natural prerequisite in practice, even though it is not a formal one.
What is the difference between CNPE and CNPA?
CNPA is the associate-level, multiple-choice version covering the same territory at a recall level. CNPE is performance-based and costs more because it asks you to actually build. CNPA is the sensible stepping stone.
