Who this is for

Engineers running or about to run Istio, who need to prove they can configure traffic and mTLS rather than describe them.

What it covers

  • Installation, upgrade and configuration (20%)
  • Traffic management (35%)
  • Securing workloads (25%)
  • Troubleshooting (20%)

Domain names above reflect the current official curriculum's topic areas; exact weightings are set by the Linux Foundation/CNCF and revised periodically, so check their published curriculum for the current breakdown.

Why it's worth it

One of the few associate-level exams that is performance-based rather than multiple choice, which makes it worth noticeably more than its "associate" label suggests. Traffic management alone is 35%, so it is largely about whether you can express routing, retries and failure injection correctly under time pressure. Only worth taking if you actually run Istio; a mesh certification on top of shaky networking fundamentals is a poor trade.

Prep tips

  • Practise in a real mesh with real traffic. The traffic-management domain is a third of the exam and it is all configuration you either have written before or have not.
  • Know the difference between a VirtualService and a DestinationRule cold. Confusing the two is the classic way to lose time.
  • Troubleshooting is 20%, so deliberately break your mesh and fix it: misapplied policy, wrong namespace, sidecar not injected.

How to use the code

  1. Add the ICA exam to your cart on training.linuxfoundation.org.
  2. Enter RUSHABH30 in the coupon field at checkout.
  3. The total drops 30%. RUSHABH30 works on the exam with one free retake, within a 12-month eligibility window.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ICA multiple choice?
No. Unusually for an associate-level exam it is performance-based: a live terminal with a real mesh, two hours. That makes it stronger evidence than most associate certifications.
How much is the ICA with a discount code?
List price is $250. With RUSHABH30 it drops to about $175, a saving of roughly $75.
Do I need the CKA before the ICA?
Not formally, and there is no prerequisite. In practice a service mesh sits on top of Kubernetes networking, so if pods, services and DNS are still hazy, learn those first or the mesh will look like magic.
ICA or CCA, which is more useful?
Whichever you actually run. ICA is Istio, CCA is Cilium, and they solve overlapping problems in very different ways. Taking the one your employer does not use is an expensive way to learn a tool you will not touch.
